Kiltale captain David Schilder recieves the Meath U14 Hurling championship cup from Ted Murtagh (sponsor, left) and Michael Mullally Chairman of the Meath Juvenile Hurling Board

Kiltale 6-12, Ratoath 2-2: Kiltale added another U14 title to the title they won last year by overcoming Ratoath in Kilmessan on Saturday.

Kiltale were quick off the mark with a goal from a 65 by captain David Schilder and further goals from Ronan and Ross Ryan gave Kiltale a cushion which they never lost.

Kiltale had points from Hugh O’Sullivan, Michael Burke, Robert McGuinness and David Schilder to put them ahead by 3-7 to 0-1 at half time.

Darragh Kelly got a point for Ratoath in the first half and was unlucky not to get a goal only for great defending by Brian Harnan and Daragh Walsh.

Kiltale started off brightly in the second half with two goals from Ronan Ryan and one from his brother Ross.

Kiltale got further points from David Schilder, Hugh O’Sullivan, Iarla Hughes and David McLoughlin and Ratoath replied with a point from Daragh Kelly.

Daragh Kelly scored two goals in last five minutes but it was to late for a Ratoath comeback.

Brian Harnan was outstanding throughout the game and got great support in defence from Hugh Smith, Sean Kiernan and Daragh Walsh.

David Schilder and Iarla Hughes dominated midfield were Daragh Kelly and Gavin King tried hardest for Rataoth.

Kiltale forwards showed great combination with twins Ronan and Ross Ryan, Hugh O’Sullivan, Michael Burke, Robert McGuinness and David McLoughlin all combining well to get great scores.

Kiltale: Fergal Ryan, Sean Ryan, Sean Kiernan, Cathal Brien, Hugh Smith, Brian Harnan, Daragh Walsh, Iarla Hughes, David Schilder 1-4, Dave McLoughlin, Michael Burke 0-1, Robert McGuinness 0-1, Hugh O’Sullivan 1-2, Ross Ryan 2-2, Ronan Ryan 2-2.
Subs: Brian O’Reilly for David McLoughlin, Kyle Benson for Iarla Hughes, Cathal Ryan for Daragh Walsh, Sean Healy for Cathal Brien, Jack Farrell for Michael Burke.

SHC semi-final: Kilmessan cruise past Kiltale

September 20, 2010

Ted Murtagh Clothing and Footwear SHC Semi Final:
Kilmessan 2-10, Kiltale 1-4

Kiltale's Stephen Whyte moves in on Kilmessan's Charlie Keena during the Meath SHC semi final at Pairc Tailteann

Kiltale's Stephen Whyte moves in on Kilmessan's Charlie Keena during the Meath SHC semi final at Pairc Tailteann

The most surprising aspect of the first of the Meath SHC semi-finals at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday was the winning margin as Kilmessan cruised through to another Jubilee Cup decider.

Goals from corner-forward Danny Maguire after seven and 20 minutes set up the former champions for a victory which was in the bag at the halfway stage when the board read 2-6 to 0-2.

Following their big replay win over Dunboyne, Kiltale were expected to put up another bold show but although only two points in arrears at the end of the opening quarter, they went 34 minutes between their second and third scores.

In a less than entertaining encounter, 10 of the 14 points registered were shot over from placed balls. Nicky Horan sent over seven points, six frees and a 65 while John Donoghue was the only scorer of a point from play for the losers.

That Donoghue score should have inspired Kiltale as the centre-forward rose to catch the sliotar and fire between the uprights. But, sadly for neutrals and supporters of the 2007 champions in the good sized crowd, it did not.

Ger O’Neill, who had opened the scoring, supplied the cross for the first goal and Maguire latched on to a pass from Charlie Keena to net the second major score.

Kiltale needed a strong start to the second period in order to make a match of it but that was not forthcoming. But instead Horan increased the lead two minutes after the restart and the dismissal of Peter Reynolds on receipt of a second yellow card on 42 minutes did not inconvenience Kilmessan.

Soon after the dismissal Charlie Keena and Eoin Marsh hit points from play and when Peter Durnin slotted over a free it was Kiltale’s first score for more than half an hour. The teams were again level numerically after 55 minutes when TJ Lynch, who was only a short time on the pitch, was shown a straight red card.

Referee Fergus Smyth allowed seven minutes of added time during which veteran replacement, Cathal Sheridan, grabbed a goal and Durnin converted another free. But those scores were little consolation to hapless Kiltale.

Kilmessan: C Curtis; E Horan, S Clynch, P McGovern; M Horan, J Keena, P Farrell; R Donnelly, P Reynolds; N Horan (0-7, 6fs, 1 65), E Marsh (0-1), K Keena; C Keena (0-1), G O’Neill (0-1), Danny Maguire (2-0). Subs: P Grimes for Farrell (37), S Brennan for E Horan (50), Darragh Maguire for O’Neill (58).

Kiltale: S McGann; S White, S Carroll, D Donoghue; S Donoghue, P Donoghue, W Mahady; I Douglas, D Dixon; M O’Sullivan, J Donoghue (0-1), P Kelly; P Durnin (0-3, 3fs), B Dixon, J Kelly. Subs: D Kane for White (21), C Sheridan (1-0) for Douglas (h-t), TJ Lynch for Dixon (50), Paul Garvey for P Kelly (52).

SHC semi-final: Durnin terminates Dunboyne campaign

Meath Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final: Kiltale 5-12, Dunboyne 1-11
4 September 2010

Kiltale's Mark O'Sullivan gets in his strike as Dunboyne's Paul Fagan tries to block during the Meath SHC quarter final replay at Trim.

Kiltale's Mark O'Sullivan gets in his strike as Dunboyne's Paul Fagan tries to block during the Meath SHC quarter final replay at Trim.

Peter Durnin scored 2-6 as Kiltale blitzed Dunboyne in this Ted Murtagh Clothing & Footwear SHC quarter-final replay at Trim on Saturday afternoon.

Unlike the drawn encounter six days earlier, when Kiltale forced extra-time and later a replay, Dunboyne were on the back foot from the off and never led.

However the sides were level twice in the early exchanges. Damien Dixon’s ninth minute point made it 0-3 to 0-2 and Kiltale were never reeled in.

Durnin’s first goal came courtesy of a 20-metre free in the 13th minute and left the board reading 1-3 to 0-2.

Dunboyne did manage to cut the gap to a goal on two occasions in the second quarter. First when Michael Dunne pointed and then in the 27th minute through Michael O’Grady.

In between those scores Kiltale moved five points clear with Durnin punishing Dunboyne from play and frees.

A more economical Kiltale put a significant desposit on a semi-final meeting with Kilmessan in the run up to half-time.

James Kelly’s 28th minute goal doubled Kiltale’s advantage. Though Neil Hackett replied with a point from play, the team in maroon and green closed were ahead by double scores, 2-8 to 0-7, at the break.

Within seconds of the restart Durnin placed Mark O’Sullivan for Kiltale’s third goal. Points from Gary Watters and Hackett (free) offered a glimmer of hope for last year’s runners-up.

Brendan Dixon fired in Kiltale’s fourth goal in the 40th minute to shut the door on Dunboyne and the board read 4-8 to 0-9.

Kiltale ‘keeper Shane McGann saved well from Neville Reilly in the 47th minute while Durnin continued to punish Dunboyne with scores from play and placed balls.

When Hackett placed Stephen Moran for Dunboyne’s goal in the 54th minute, Kiltale still held a double scores advantage, 4-10 to 1-11.

Durnin completed a memorable afternoon for Kiltale with his side’s fifth goal, in the 58th minute, when placed by experienced substitute Cathal Sheridan.

Kiltale – S. McGann; D. Donoghue, S .Carroll, S. White; W. Mahady, P. Donoghue, S. Donoghue; D. Dixon (0-1), P. Donoghue; M. O’Sullivan (1-0), J. Donoghue, I. Douglas (0-1); J. Kelly (1-1), B. SHC quarter-final: Kiltale and Dunboyne inseparable

August 30, 2010

Meath Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final: Kiltale 1-23, Dunboyne 3-17
30 August 2010

Kiltale and Dunboyne have to do it all again next Saturday at 4pm in Trim after the sides finished level after extra time.

This was an evenly contested match all through and at different stages it looked as if one particular team would go on to win the game.

Kiltale hit six wides in the opening ten minutes after they launched several early attacks at the Dunboyne defence.

Dunboyne opened the scoring with two frees from Niall Hackett but Kiltale replied with scores from Peter Durnin and Brendan Dixon.

The turning point if the first half came when Neville Reilly latched on to a ball after confusion in the Kiltale defence to finish to the net to put Dunboyne ahead by four points.

The best score of the day came when Stephen Donoghue caught a high ball and hand passed to brother John who hand passed to Mark O’Sullivan who hand passed to Brendan Dixon who passed on to James Kelly who finished to the net.

Kiltale scored two more points to leave them ahead by one point at half time.

The second half was very tight and it was hard to say which team looked likely to win.

Peter Durnin was on top form for Kiltale but Dunboyne got a crucial goal from a penalty after Niall Hackett was pulled down going through and he converted the penalty to put Dunboyne in the driving seat.

Kiltale players John Donoghue and Mark O’Sullivan came more into the game and O’Sullivan was proving a real handful for the Dunboyne defence and he hit three lovely points from out on the terrace side of the field.

Durnin levelled the game with a free for Kiltale on full time.

In extra time Kiltale got off to great start going into a three point lead and when Mark O’Sullivan rounded Paul Fagan a goal looked a certainty but he blazed over the bar as Reilly advanced from the Dunboyne goal.

Kiltale seemed to be in the driving seat after James Kelly hit a further point but Dunboyne stormed back into the game with a goal from Niall Hackett.

Dunboyne then took control again and thanks to some fine saves from Shane McGann in the Kiltale goal extra time finished in a draw.

Great credit to both teams for a very enjoyable game.

Donal Smith has to be congratulated on the manner in which he let the game flow and he contributed to one of the most entertaining games of this year which made supporters feel that the got some value for their entrance fee.
